Shaping the Future of Digital Infrastructure in the Mediterranean

Oceans & Cables attended Subsea Italy 2026 – The Mediterranean Nexus, held in Genoa, Italy, bringing together industry leaders, technology innovators, infrastructure investors, and policymakers to discuss the future of digital infrastructure across Europe, the Mediterranean, and beyond.

Representing Oceans & Cables at the event were Director Aldo Monaca and team member Antonio Zaccaria. Mr Monaca attended primarily in his capacity as a representative of the Italian Hydrographic Society (IHS), reinforcing the strong connection between hydrography, marine surveying, and the future of subsea infrastructure. The event provided an excellent opportunity to engage with international stakeholders, exchange expertise, and contribute to discussions on the technologies and partnerships shaping the next generation of global connectivity.

The event highlighted a fundamental shift in how the world views subsea infrastructure. Submarine cables are no longer simply hidden assets beneath the ocean; they have become strategic infrastructure that underpins global communications, cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), data sovereignty, cybersecurity, and economic resilience. As the demand for digital connectivity continues to accelerate, the Mediterranean is emerging as one of the world’s most important strategic hubs for subsea connectivity and AI-driven digital growth.

Subsea Italy 2026 focused on the convergence of several rapidly evolving sectors, including subsea and terrestrial telecommunications networks, AI-ready data centres, sovereign cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, offshore renewable energy, and critical infrastructure protection. Bringing these sectors together creates opportunities to build resilient digital ecosystems capable of supporting the next generation of global connectivity.

Attending the event was an opportunity to engage directly with international stakeholders, exchange technical knowledge, and strengthen relationships across the submarine cable industry. Discussions throughout the conference reinforced the growing importance of collaboration between engineering specialists, telecommunications operators, energy providers, investors, and governments to deliver secure, sustainable, and future-proof infrastructure.

As a specialist in submarine cable consultancy, installation support, marine engineering, and offshore infrastructure, Oceans & Cables remains committed to delivering innovative solutions that support telecommunications, offshore energy, renewable energy, marine construction, and scientific research projects worldwide. With extensive experience across the complete lifecycle of submarine infrastructure projects, the company continues to help clients develop reliable and sustainable offshore solutions.

Such events demonstrate that the future of digital infrastructure lies at the intersection of technology, sustainability, engineering, and geopolitics. As demand for secure data transmission, AI computing capacity, and resilient international connectivity continues to grow, submarine cable networks will remain one of the most critical foundations of the global digital economy.

Oceans & Cables is proud to be part of these important conversations and looks forward to contributing to the next generation of subsea infrastructure that will connect nations, strengthen economies, and support the world’s rapidly evolving digital future.
