Oceans & Cables attends GEOMAR-led UXO Symposium

17.09.2026

Monaco, 16 – 17 September 2026 – Towards Scalable Clearance of Munitions in the Sea

These days Oceans & Cables Ltd participated in the mid-term Symposium and Workshop on “Munitions in the Sea” held in Monaco, organised by GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and partners of the EU-funded CAMMera consortium.

The workshop brought together leading researchers, technology providers, and industry stakeholders to discuss the growing challenge of historic munitions dumped in European seas.

Key topics addressed during the presentations:

– The scale of the problem: millions of tonnes of conventional and chemical munitions corroding on the seabed, becoming an emerging source of marine pollution.

– From detection to disposal: moving beyond pure mapping towards scalable, environmentally safe clearance and disposal technologies.

– The integration of science, policy, and commercial operations to develop a sustainable framework for offshore operations.

For us as Oceans & Cables, this is a critical issue. Every subsea cable route and offshore survey today must account for the UXO risk. Meeting the teams who are developing the next generation of detection and low-impact clearance is fundamental to our operational strategy.

Participation in the Monaco workshop reinforces Oceans & Cables’ commitment to safe, responsible, and environmentally aware offshore operations, and strengthens our network within the European marine munitions’ expert community.

We would like to thank GEOMAR and everyone involved for the excellent organisation and for the open, collaborative discussion.
